Valley
Forge Mountain Racquet Club
was incorporated in 1968 as a Pennsylvania non-profit organization whose
purpose was to further the recreational opportunities of the residents
of Valley Forge Mountain and its neighboring areas.
Initially, there
were only two asphalt courts. However, by 1974, the need for more courts
was already apparent -- and a third court was added. The membership
in the Club has varied over the years as tennis families arrived and
departed. The '70's and '80's were busy years, and the members were
very active. The courts were resurfaced in 1983 and 1991. Nevertheless,
a lull settled over the Club in the mid to late '90's, as interest in
tennis also waned nationwide. This was before the burst of energy that
occurred in the Fall of 2000 -- a period that will undoubtedly be recorded
in the Club Annals as "the Great Revival."
The courts had fallen
into disrepair in the late 90's and membership had steadily diminished
- until somewhat inexplicably, a collective gasp arose from the hardy
souls that remained. They realized they faced a "use it or lose it"
circumstance. Spearheaded by Marilyn Ogden, a fresh burst of energy
was channelled into a very productive membership drive, culminating
in a major initiative to restore the Club to full glory. With a sufficient
number of new members to persuade Phoenixville Federal Savings Bank
to provide sufficient capital for rebuild the courts, we charged forward.
We now have
3 state-of-the-art HarTru® clay courts, proclaimed as some of the
best in the region. Installed by Sportsline, Inc., of Villanova, during
the late spring of 2002, we have witnessed a mini-boom in interest in
our Club - one of the best kept secrets in Chester County.
